Abolition

The first thing that pops in our minds when we hear the word “abolition” is the freeing of slaves. It is one thing to be set free and yet a totally different thing to get rid of the slave-mentality. You may be free on the outside but you are still bound on the inside.
John 8:36 Jesus said, “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” (NKJ)
Jesus came to do for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (NKJ)
Hebrews 2:14-15 Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. (Berean)
If you live with a slave-mentality long enough it produces in you a victim-mentality. A slave mentality says, “I have no power.” A victim mentality says, “I have no responsibility.” Both keep people stuck. Neither reflects the Kingdom.
Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery. (Berean)
When God brought Israel out of Egypt, He broke their chains in a moment — but it took years to break the chains in their minds.
They said things like: “We were better off in Egypt.” “We’re going to die in the wilderness.” “We can’t defeat those giants.”
They were physically free but mentally enslaved. A slave mentality always looks backward. A victim mentality always looks outward for someone to blame. But God is trying to teach us to look upward.
What Is a Slave Mentality?
A slave mentality is when people believe: Life happens to me, not through me. I react instead of lead. I wait for someone else to fix me. I expect bondage more than breakthrough.
It’s the mindset that says, “I’m stuck, and I’ll always be stuck.” But Scripture says, “Whom the Son sets free is free indeed.” Freedom is not just a condition — it’s a calling.
Let’s go back to John chapter eight to see a clear picture of what Jesus was saying about freedom.
John 8:31-36 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. (NKJ)
How Slave Mentality Becomes Victim Mentality
When people stay in a slave mentality long enough, they begin to believe: “I’m powerless.” “I’m owed something.”
“My past excuses my present.” “My pain gives me permission to stay the same.” Victim mentality is subtle because it feels justified. But it steals your authority, your responsibility, and your purpose.
Victims don’t fight giants. Victims don’t cross Jordans. Victims don’t take promised lands. Victims wait. Victors take action.
God’s Answer: Renewing the Mind
God didn’t take Israel straight into the Promised Land because He had to transform their thinking first.
Romans 12:2 “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (NKJ)
Transformation doesn’t start with circumstances — it starts with mindset. God had to teach them: You are My people, not Pharaoh’s property. You are warriors, not slaves. You are heirs, not victims. The Promised Land requires a Promised Mindset.
How to Break the Slave/Victim Mentality
1. Reject the Lie. You are not powerless. You are not stuck. You are not defined by your past. 2. Accept Responsibility. Freedom is a partnership — God provides the power; you provide the obedience. 3. Walk in Authority. Victims wait for permission. Victors walk in purpose.
God didn’t bring you out of bondage so you could live like a victim. He brought you out so you could live like a son, a daughter, a warrior, an heir. Slaves react. Victims retreat. But sons and daughters rise.
You are not who the world, others, or your past says you are. You are who God says you are! Walk out of the slave and victim mentality. Step boldly into the freedom Christ purchased for you.
